I understand that jobs at the top IBs are among the most competitive jobs to secure, but how competitive actually is it? As in is there any valid statistics about the number of places per application for graduate analyst roles?

Any statistic is going to be misleading because so many applications are junk apps from people who are totally unsuitable for the role.

Why do you want to you?

Morgan Stanley have recently said (cba to get link, google it, it's pretty recent news) that they received 90,000 applications for 1000 summer intern positions, so that's a 90:1 ratio, but as has been mentioned, a great deal will probably have been junk 'hit and hope' applications.

Hard to say. Just forget about competition and statistics and apply anyway, it makes no difference.

Worth adding this was on a global basis and not just London.

Also bear in mind that those same 90 people applying for each place will be applying to every bank so the statistics aren't always as bad as they seem.

    See here: http://www.businessweek.com/articles...ey-this-summer

Also, as mentioned, a good number are just people who have heard of $$$ and think there is no harm trying their luck.

In short, it's ridiculously competitive and the recruitment process is very long.

I must say that most of the top IBs jobs is highly competitive, job of these type are having high competition and only limited seats for every graduate, they are also having some criteria set for graduates, everyone want a safe and secure job. As i suggest that you please go through the particular website for which you have to apply for job.
