Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI, Audi A3 1.6 TDI, VW Golf, Skoda Fabia.

It's hard to give suggestions when your specifications are pretty much for 70% of cars on the market.

Fair point! Good fuel economy would be nice, and one which will lead to lower insurance costs if that narrows it down at all?

You don't sound like someone who is big into cars.

Therefore one of the following :-

    Ford Focus 1.6TDCI
Hyundai i30 or Kia Ceed (they are both the same cars under the skin) 1.6l

If you want something smaller then:-

    Suzuki Swift.

At your budget you should be able to get one that is 5 years old or and in excellent condition.
