    Thank you

Do you think that it would be beneficial to end this quote and explain it on my personal statement for a degree in Sociology, as I really want to end with a quote?

Yeah sure, as long as you can explain it and have a reason for using it I don't see why not. (:

XsimstarX please consider not using the quote. You don't want to be a hostage to fortune and that it is the sort of thing a university interview might pick up on and ask you to explain on the spot (and then you will be struggling). The context of the quote is important. It comes from Orwell's critique of the art of Donald McGill and while physicsbook is sort of correct the meaning here is in the context of transgressive literature (the comic strip and saucy postcards) making different demands of its pleasure seeking audience than those of the official canon of literary greatness and its conservative moral demands. If you are not entirely sure what it means please don't use it. Sociology admissions tutors are looking for an interest in social issues and an awareness of how these issues impact upon your own biography (class, gender, ethnicity, cultural values, etc). If you reflect upon these you will not go far wrong (kill the quote though ...). Good luck with it!!
