what does it actually show?
I have 2 conditioned repeated twice and my teacher says I should subtract the results from trial one of each condition from trial 2 and put the absolutes though the test but this doesn't seem right to me and I don't understand what the test proves or how it does so

I've only ever done this stats test on a computer but basically Mann Whitney shows you the significant difference between two sets of data, and Spearmans shows you whether there's a significant correlation between the two sets.
These stats test usually test your null hypothesis e.g X is not affected by Y.
If this hypothesis is significant at 5% or less, then it means that you accept your alternative hypothesis e.g X is affected by Y.
Sorry that I couldn't explain this much in terms of maths, but this is more or less what the stats tests are for.
