People keep telling me to do some subject knowledge research prior to starting the PGCE? What do they mean?

I thought that was pretty straightforward.. But you need to self assess your knowledge of primary subjects against the curriculum.
For example, what is your numeracy like? Do you know what a quotient is? Can you convert fractions to decimals? How would predict the square root of a large number?
What about literacy: do you know your word classes? What's a main clause? How many children's authors have you read?
    Etc etc...
