Okay, well really I'm not retaking a whole year, just one core module. Basically, I've just come to the end of my third year and should be graduating. All my grades are really good apart from I haven't completed my dissertation. Due to personal issues, I had mitigating circumstances agreed, however it still hasn't been enough and I won't be submitting it this year. In this instance, I've been told it will be recorded as a fail and then I can re-register to do it next year. Taking my other grades into account, I'm confident that once I've completed it next year, I will obtain at least a high 2:1 or maybe even a 1st overall. I'm just wondering if anyone knows what effect this might have on my graduate prospects? It will show up on my transcripts that I originally failed it and even if a company doesn't look at my transcripts, I'll still have to explain why it took me 4 years to complete my course instead of 3. Anyone know if this will have a negative impact?

If you had mitigating circumstances then it shouldn't be an issue, just make sure that the employer is aware of it when you apply. I can't see it having negative consequences as long as you explain yourself.
