I think turtles are awesome. Look at this adorable little guy, as the lady feeds him, he doesn't even snap at her finger, he gobbles the delicious morsel carefully and deliberately to avoid biting his master. And he has such a cute little beak

And in this one, if you can ignore the stupid music, when the little turtle sees his master come into the room, he starts begging for treats, almost like a pup

    Turtles are amazing.

    Just look at this chap:
Oh wow, what an amazing beast! He's beautiful, and so graceful. He's probably very old too, some turtles are over 200 years old.

When I was living in the states, I went to stay with a friend in Florida and we went swimming in a river. Afterwards we were sitting on the bank eating sandwiches and a fairly large Snapping Turtle ran up to our picnic blanket, hissing and biting. We had to abandon our day out because they are very evil creatures, they can take your foot off, they have incredible jaw strength

With that exception, most turtles are wise and noble creatures. Still, I do feel sorry for the Snapping Turtle in this video, he looks very angry and I would be too if I were kept in a little box and made to perform tricks

Oh dear, I probably should! I didn't see the first movie of the reboot, so I should catch up on it.

I love TMNT when I was a boy, absolutely loved it. Are the new movies any good?

Heroes in a half-shell, turtle power!

They can have very different personalities. For some of them, if you take them out of the tank, they will just hide in their shell, poor thing.

But others, once they get used to it, they will happily run around the house and explore, and sometimes even hide for a day or two. And then they realise they have to let you catch them if they want to go back home to the terrarium to have their supper

My only advice would be to get them a nice big tank, many people keep them in tiny little plastic containers which is so cruel They should have plenty of space to swim, and some interesting toys and maybe an underwater castle in their tank, a varied diet (you can feed them different things, they eat reptile food from pet shops, it's also good to introduce some veggies into their diet).

And over time, you can usually socialise them. They learn to recognise their master and they will swim up to you when you enter the room. They will also splash about to get your attention if you forget to feed them. They are obviously quite different from dogs, remember they are reptiles so they have very different ways of thinking from us, but they are delightful creates imho

Oh the extroverts and introverts of the turtle species

I have an African snail and he has a completely different personality to previous african snails I've owned.

Do you own turtles at the moment?

Not anymore, I had two turtles when I was 16-17. After that I found it difficult to care for them with all that I had going on in my life so I donated them to a reptile sanctuary.

One thing to keep in mind with turtles is that they can live for 100+ years (some species live for over 200 years), so it is a huge commitment, or you should be willing to find a good home for your turtles if you can't really take care of them anymore.

Aw I'd love to have some. I hope to have some one day, but I'm getting a dog so I best wait. I don't know how well turtles and dogs get on

How to cope with pets that outlive you - maybe a good thread idea Yeah I don't know if I could dedicate enough time to them.

It really depends on the dog. Take a look at this video of Cheetah, the friendly turtle. He likes to play with his master and with visitors. He is a kindly turtle.

Unfortunately late in the video, their pet dig nips and bites at him, and he hides in his shell Perhaps the dog thinks he's being playful, but it must be very frightening for the poor turtle. I would only do this if it was a very friendly dog and a robust turtle.

Having said that, I have heard people who say their turtle and their dog get along really well.

Unlike other pets, turtles don't need a lot of attention. They are self-sufficient little beasts, and they are happy to just swim around and play with each other in their tank (presuming you get two, which you should so they can keep each other company)

Ultimately, as you pointed out, it is their lifespan that is the issue. They are very long-lived, and if you do take on a turtle, make sure that at the least you have a good home for them to go to once you have had enough time as their carer

I haven't any experience with turtles but I have 3 tortoises (well I had to leave them at a relatives house in Pakistan) and they were so cute, they would always love their morning shower

You've obviously never heard of the leatherback sea turtle.
