Using a monitor instead of a TV screen

When I (hopefully) go to uni in september, instead of getting a TV (since I'd rather not have to pay for a TV liscense) I'm thinking about using a computer monitor to play my xbox but I have no idea what one to get..

Any that have a HDMI input seem to be pretty expensive to me :/

The cheapest that I can find so far is this one, http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/desktop-pc-monitors/monitor-projectors/pc-monitors/philips-227e4lhab-full-hd-21-5-led-monitor-21853516-pdt.html

I also found this one on amazon but i'm not sure if it'll be any good, http://www.amazon.co.uk/VS228HR-21-5-inch-Widescreen-Intelligence-Technology/dp/B00EJFEWSI/ref=sr_1_7?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1404156591&sr=1-7

anyone got any ideas? cx

(ps i'm not sure if i posted this in the right section Dx)

You don't need a TV license if you have a TV  Only if you want to watch live television.

Although if you are set on a monitor, this one would be fine: http://www.ebuyer.com/638933-hanns-g-hl226hpb-21-5-hdmi-monitor-with-speakers-hl226hpb
You don't have to have a TV licence to just play games on it. You only need a licence if it's connected to an aerial and you're receiving channels on it. There's nothing illegal about using a TV as a monitor.

i read online that you have to prove that you aren't going to be using it to watch tv but that it was difficult to prove :s hmm, i think a monitor would be cheaper than a tv anyway cx

There's no way you can be detected. You get detected if you don't have a license and are watching TV because the company can see where the channels and waves are being received, but they can't use x-ray vision to look in your room. They can't tell if you have a TV in the same way that they can't tell what colour socks are in your drawer.

You don't need a TV license unless you watch live TV so it be perfectly acceptable for gaming. Can you not take a computer or old tv from home as you then would not need to buy one?
Tv price for a new one varies greatly but I got a bush 24" full hd tv with built in DVD player for circa 160 when I went to uni, so I am sure they must be some reasonable deals tbh.

I just have my netbook which has a tiny screen so i was looking for a bigger screen basically .-.
I use a Samsung 24" LED monitor, because I don't watch TV, and you can get a screen like that for close to £90 on Amazon - especially handy if you have Prime. I'll be picking up a second one next month for a dual-monitor setup, so I can game and watch my desktop without having to alt-tab.

That Philips monitor is good, I have it and did used to game on it. No frame-rate dropping or anything  I have however recently changed to a TV because I wanted to be able to watch TV in my bedroom, that's 30" with 2 HDMI inputs.

However, if you're looking for value then that Philips monitor is the best option.
Just look on EBay/Amazon and filter to 1080p and 19-22inch.

You're bound to find something better than anything at PC world. If you're console gaming it would be worth getting a moniter with a headphone jack/built in speakers.
That's what I did with my 360 at uni, got a viewsonic moniter off eBay for £100 and pluged some turtle beaches unto the headphone jack.

You can stream freeview TV from a number of sites off your lappy. If you want to use the Mon just stick a HDMI into it and watch TV on the Mon via the website.
