Need Statistics Help for EPQ Watch

1. I have data for my EPQ, three different areas in the world, and for each year I have the population and murder figures.

I want to compare the figures across the different countries, and compare them with each other, however I don't want the different population sizes to distort the figures.

I need some way of having a single figure that has taken into consideration the population size, so I have figures that reflect the different population levels.

Practically speaking, if I have a certain number of murders in America for one year, and a certain number of murders in England and I want to compare the two, because the population in England is smaller, it will make it seem as though the murder rate is lower in England compared to America, however this may not be true as America has a higher population than England?

Any help would be appreciated, I can't seem to find a way to solve this at all!

The easiest and most sensible thing to do would be to calculate "murder per capita" or murder per unit of population. To get this, you would divide the number of murders by the size of the population. If the murder numbers are very small, then you may want to take an average over a number of years so these numbers are more reliable.
3. Thank you! I did this, and turned it into a ratio as suggested by somebody else, so then I had a person : murder ratio, and ended up with 1 : 0.00567 for example, and then x100,000 so I had 100,000 : 567, so for every 100,000 people there's roughly 567 murders, and this has been the easiest way to 'standardise' the different values.
