My car is making a noise from the rear when I brake at low speeds, fine at high speed but noisy at lower speeds. not wheel bearing, brakes or brake shoes as these have been checked.
A mechanic friend told me my shock absorbers need replacing but said they are not the cause of the noise whilst another mechanic friend of mine said it probably is to do with the shock absorbers.

can't really think of how to explain the noise to ya'll

Could be the bushes, especially if it is a squeak.

What does the noise sound like? My car failed it's MOT due to a bad shock at the front...at high speeds the noise wasn't audible but at low speed there was a bit of a hollow clunk/rattle which went away about 20 mph plus

One simple test for dampers is to give a good hard push down at each corner of the car. It should dip then rebound and settle pretty much instantly. If it continues to bounce up and down for a while your dampers are tired. It doesn't rule out other faults but worth a try.
