If Homosexual relationships are acceptable, why aren't incestuous ones?

Because they are completely different.

Incestuous relationships are not acceptable because it leads to an increase in inherited diseases in the childeren among other things.

Homosexual relationships are between two people of the same sex. Incestuous relationships are between two people who are closely related.
That's a difference.

In support of homosexuality people say that

-people are free to do what they want in their private time
-one can't help how one feels
-there are 2 concenting adults
-individuals should learn to be tolerant
-no one has a duty to conform to conservative values

surely this applies to those seeking to have an incestuous relationship?

yes, it does.

I'll try to explain what I'm getting at. Homosexuality has its down sides; the concept of it offends people, it ebbs away at traditional values; no doubt incest has the same down sides. However, arguing from a ubiquitous liberal standpoint one may say that we are all entitled to behave how we want provided we do not infringe on anyone else's liberty; if a brother and sister, both rational and consenting individuals, seek to be partners, why stop them?

Applying the rationale used to condone/support homosexuality, the liberal should condone/support incest. Unless, of course, the individual seeks to appear hypocritical and contradictory.

No doubt a time will come when they won't be stopped

Whats the law on this issue? Will it be the same as the "normal" age of consent?

Incest is illegal.

p.s. this is a rather ambiguous thread title.

The problem is that incestuous relationships are most commonly not between 2 consenting adults - they're abusive relationships between uncle/aunt/neice/nephew, parent/child, brother/sister etc etc.

This makes the law makers reluctant to make these types of relationships more accepted in law.

Even though most people can understand quite clearly the difference between 2 adults in a relationship and an adult abusing a minor (just as most rational people do not label homosexuals as paedophiles).

Personally I have no problems with anyone taking part in an adult consensual relationship - no matter who they are.
The reason incest is not allowed is medical - in incestuous relationships harful versions of genes are more likely to be shared by both hsband and wife and so the chace of childeren having genetic diseases is greatly increased.

Agreed. It is the same with homosexuality, as the age of consent for homosexuals is not the same as that for heterosexuals; presumably due to fears of abuse (how plausible this view is I do not know).

But theoretically, consenting incest could be advocated. And you could have the odd situation of a mother's son simultaneously becoming her step son

In this day and age surely it is possible to separate sex and procreation?

Are you saying that the relationships should be allowed but not to procreate?

Of course it's also been postulated that the reason for large increases in the rate of evolution following mass extinction events is because an increase in incestual sex increases the likelyhood of mutations which may or may not be beneficial in the new environment.

So you could argue that we should all marry our cousins in a deliberate campaign to help the human species evolve quicker

Firstly, I'd like to say that I doubt incest's banning is solely on medical grounds. Secondly, gay sexual practice has it's own medical problems; namely through the increased chance of transferring STDs.

But what if medical problems were to be put aside. What if there was a gay incestuous relationship? Or one where one of the partners was infertile, or if contraception was regularly used? Then there are no medical grounds for banning it, surely.
