Is Dentistry Difficult and why is it so competitive?

I hope this isnt a stupid question but i was just wondering if dentisty is difficult with regards to the material that is studied. And is it so competitive because so many people want to study the course, so they have to ask for high grades??

I guess there is alot of stress invloved with the course because there is so much to learn but i'm just curious what material is covered and how difficult it would be to study.

Thank you xx

The grades are high mostly due to the number of applications. The first two years of dentistry are pretty similar to medicine (at least at manchester) and while the content of the course isn't particularly difficult there is a lot to learn.

Entry grades are not high purely due to competition however; medicine/dentistry requires a lot of commitment and motivation to work hard and high A level grades are a good indictaion of such motivation.

It's not difficult, but there is a large amount of information that you've got to learn. It becomes progressivly harder as the years go on, and inevitably will consume your life.

Entry is fierce because there are few places at a dozen or so uni's, and a very high number of applicant. It was actually the more competitive course to get into in 2005.
