Hi, I'm looking for a used car to run me around whilst studying for a PhD. The reason I'm after my own transport is that I'll be based at 3 different sites across 2 cities, and also be living with my parents to save some money.

I'm expecting to probably do 15,000 miles a year, which is my weekly commute plus two trips to visit my girlfriend in Sheffield. Based on an mpg of around 50, I'm expecting fuel to cost around £150 a month.

At the moment, I've been looking at the Fiat Grande Punto (2006 onwards), as they are coming up around £3-4k second hand for a diesel model.

Any other suggestions or ideas are welcome, and feel free to tell me that I'm wrong to chase a Punto!

    Thanks

    Grande Punto = Vauxhall Corsa

Only differences are the engine and gearbox.

I'd probably look into a Ford Focus 1.6TDCI instead.

    Cheers for the reply

I've got a garage near home with a Focus (1.8 diesel), Fiesta and Polo in stock so might try and get a drive in them all. I guess the 1.8 will be excessive but at least I can try a few cars side by side. I've not even been able to see inside a car yet in 3 times of heading to a garage, so I'm still quite unsure as to what I want!
