Because of having no credit report I've been declined, pain in the arse but fair enough. I decided to apply for a credit card to use to pay my petrol on to build a bit of history but I've been declined for that as well.

Is there any way around it?

    Nope.

Make sure you are registered to vote. You could get a contract if you pay a fairly high amount of money upfront, I was quoted nearly two hundred from the Apple store. I tried everywhere. I got rejected even for a contract sim card. I finally got a contract phone with t-mobile/ee via a third party site called Affordablemobiles.co.uk. I pay directly to t-mobile, I didn't pay a penny to the site, and got an iphone 5 with a substantial allowance for 32 pounds a month. My phone also came within two days. Only trouble with it was a smashed screen courtesy of me being a clutz at new years.

I later took out another contract for my mother and took up the free gift plan. No hassle whatsoever, the phone came first and within a week the toshiba laptop arrived.

So when this contract runs out, I'll have the credit history that ought to let me get accepted for other contracts. I've been told I need to build up my credit history, since places are quite strict on having a good credit history before they provide loans/credit cards/contract mobiles.

The issue that you're going to have is that you're a student. Student's can't get good anything more than a fair credit rating. I tried to take out finance for a MacBook and a credit card last month but my credit rating wouldn't let me.

As suggested, get yourself registered to vote, a job would be great too.

I've recently started a new job so I should be earning a more stable income in the next couple of months. My dad pays my phone bill, could I get this switched over to my name and build up credit that way? Thank you all for your replies x
