Like drugs, pornography can be very addictive and damaging. Furthermore, pornography can be an agent of marital breakdown, where one member becomes "hooked". Many of the "actors/actresses" become involved in the industry because of exploitation, and many get STDs.

Do you agree?

Consuming porn is not ideal. Question - would legally banning it reduce its consumpton? Very doubtful, especially with the Internet. How can we reduce consumption? Like all collective changes it must begin with the individual - the collective consumption is the consumption of a collective of individuals - when individual minds and hearts change, then so does the collective. Enlightenment, not law, changes.

I'd say you make quite a sweeping generalisation about porn stars, many I would suggest get involved because of limited routes to other sources of income.
As for pornography as already mentioned banning it is firstly neigh on impossible and secondly would just make it worse.

I think that in general the damage caused by porn is reflective of the society in which its featured. For example i can see the American porn industry being quite well regulated however in countries in Eastern Europe and Asia i can see there might well be more expolition of those involded.

Women generally get paid more than men in porn.

naa, there has always been porn in some way... why ban it? Prostitution is worse, in terms of STDs and criminality, not mentioning the marriages...

I think if many people weren´t so boring in bed we wouldn´t need either

Ahhh, thats why you were advocating not banning it then.
What about pornstars? Just cut off their income? And im sure that some porn in moderation can't be that bad for a marriage... it means that the man is less likely to commit adultery. And also the extreme affects of pornography will just get worse if you make it illegal...younger generations will think that is something that they have to look at. In addition to that, the government will spend their time trying to stop people looking at porn and arresting them, that real trouble can't be dealt with. What punishment can you give to those people then? Put them in the overcrowded jails?

You also haven't defined what kind of porn? Soft or hardcore?

I think our friend was referring to hardcore porn - his reference to "pornstars" indicates this (models in softcore porn are "glamour models"; models in hardcore porn are "adult models" or "porn stars").

We are of course all in agreement that paedophilic porn should be banned.

Including Howard, hopefully.
