Alcohol and vomiting

I have a problem that would usually be very misunderstood by people that don't know me. Basically alcohol makes me puke. Well duh I'm sure you're all thinking. Most people aren't sick from alcohol unless they are absolutely wasted to the extent that they probably won't remember it in the morning. But for me I'm very often sick before I get anywhere near that level of drunkeness. Sometimes I'm sick after only a couple of drinks, way before it's had any affect on my behaviour at all.

It does depend on what I'm drinking to quite a lot. Straight spirits like vodka or whisky will probably make me vomit instantly, but I would imagine it's like that for a lot of people. Shots with more sugar in like sambucha. I don't usually do shots so this isn't a big deal.

Now here is where it gets odd. I'd like to be able to drink more beer on a night out but after a couple of beers I feel like I can't drink any more, and if I do I'm sick. The weird thing is this feeling comes and goes over time. I don't mean on a night out, but over the course of a few months. A few months ago I found it much easier to drink more beer, but now I can't. But a few months before that it was more like now. But on occasion I can quite easily drink beer all night without too much problem, but this is rare.

After I've had enough beer I usually go onto sprit mixers which I can generally handle fine, but even then sometimes they make me feel queasy.

Any one else have problems like this? I know it's not a big deal, but I see people saying that only complete binge drinkers vomit from alcohol, and in my case it isn't true.

Oh and a bit of background knowledge. There was a period when I was younger when I was sick for no reason on an almost daily basis. And I was sick whenever I would go out for a meal. Even now I find it difficult to eat a whole meal in a restaurant, and when mixing it with even a tiny amount of beer it gets difficult keeping it down.

Go see your doctor then

herhaps you are allergic to alcohol???
Reply 3
yes, i think some people are simply allergic to the stuff

I actually did when I had my problems when I was young. They didn't find anything wrong. It's pointless going now because I know their solution would be to just stop drinking.

I suppose an allergy to it is a possibility, but that doesn't explain why some drinks are so much worse than others.
Reply 5
well, it would, because some drinks are stronger, or your allergy could be made worse when alcohol is combined with sugar etc

:ditto: took the words right out of my mouth

beer has less alcohol than coolers which have less than those mixed shots you can buy which have less than the others (i.e. rum, vodka, tequila etc.)

But a double shot plus mixer is usually stronger than beer. And when mixed with sugar it's better, not worse.

just take it slow until you get used to alcohol over time.

It's not like I'm new to drinking. I'm 19 but I have been drinking for nearly 5 years (yeah I was an underage drinker but I never caused trouble, but I feel ashamed that I was around people that did).
How old are you if you don’t mind me asking, the reason I ask is a few year ago this sounded EXACTLY like me, it wasn’t until meby 16 that I had any hope of keeping a reasonable amount down and not until recently (since about 17 1/2) that I was able to have a significant drink on a night out.

EDIT: woops I guess you just answered that

takes some people longer than others.

Either that, or, like some people have said, you might be something like allergic to alcohol.

Just keep clear of the vodka for now

Oh trust me I do if it's straight. Mixed is fine. Actually I think the vodka might be a special case. I had a bad experience with too much russian vodka once and now I can't stand it.

haha, that's because it's potato vodka - look for rye vodka.

Just don't touch sainsbury's own brand. oh god!

but what's wrong with sticking to beer anyway? less alcohol, more drink.

No idea what type of vodka it was, I'm just guessing it was russian since I was in russia at the time.

I'd love to stick to beer but drinking beer is one of the biggest problems. I don't care about being able to drink straight spirits but I want to be able to drink beer.

Yeah they're fine, same with vodka that is mixed to the extent I can't taste it (regardless of how much it has actually been diluted). Although alcopops are slightly more sickly just because of the amount of sugar in them. But that's a completely different issue.

ok, given what you've said about throwing up with meals etc as well, I'm reminded of a mate who does something similar. I forget what it's called but I think it's something to do with the stomach lining. You can drink them drinks because the alcohol is hidden by the juice and sugar (yuk) from the stomach lining so that's why you're ok. I think my mate takes something for it (a trip to the doctor's is in order) but other than that, you could possibly try eating plain bread before going out? So I say doctor - esp given the food throwing up thingie.

bear in mind that I was crap at chemistry and biology, have no medical experience at all and am thinking of my mate who sounds similar.

(if you want I could ask her what it is, because the doc also told her there was nothing wrong for ages too. but I'd pm you answer though in the morning as I don't think she'd be all too happy if I text her right now :p:)

Thanks, that would be great. I don't throw food up any more but it still isn't easy for me to eat a lot. I always figured there was some psychological element to it since I'd find it easier to eat more at home than if I went out for dinner.

drink milk to line your stomach b4 you go out drinking.. NOT AFTER!!!

foods such as pasta & bready foods (anything that will absorb the liquid in your belly) are also good..

i presume you have tried different types of beers? lager is extremely fizzy and gassy, i have had it a few times where i drink, and feel so bloated that i'm sick,, try drinking guinniss or real ales, maybe bitter like john smiths, they are much less gassy.. also it may be something specifically in that type of beer that you are allergic to, or disagree with. so trying different drinks (the non-mainstream/student drinks) might work.. but i agree with everyone else, its obviously not essential to be able to get drunk, but its something you should see your doc about if it worries you.
