My dad uses skype to talk to me via video call but is running XP. It keeps asking him to update but when he does it's no longer compatible with XP. I'm using windows 7.

What could we use that would work for him? I don't need it to be compatible with a smart phone and preferably something that's easy to set up as (you've probably guessed) he's not all that great with technology.

I have just updated a SKype install on an XP machine and that seems fine?

Perhaps he needs to update to Win XP SP3.

Tbh I have no idea what his problem is He tells me that when he updates it stops working but he's crap with computers so I don't know.

SP3 is pretty old now isn't it? It should be installed.

Do we both just need to join google+ and it's there or is it a separate program on top?

Lol, no idea why. Maybe uninstall and reinstall? You could use remote assistance to help him, though he'll have to email you the invitation file manually.

XP is pretty risky to run nowadays, lacking security and all.

Isn't there a Facebook application you can use too?

You both need to sign up, but it's all done in-browser, the only thing you'd potentially need to download are any outdated plugins.

I think it uses flash. More and more stuff is no longer supporting xp now (including Microsoft) so upgrading to windows 7 is another solution
