If someone becomes pregnant during their PhD studies, will they automatically be qualified for paid maternity leave? Who pays it - the state? Is it the same being UK and non-UK citizen?

What happens if the parent is a man? No money from anyone, regardless of the need to care for a baby?

Same with sickness, are sick PhD students eligible for paid sick leave or anything like that?

A PHD student who is employed has the same right as other employees. All other PHD students are dependant on where there funding comes from and what are the conditions. Students aren't paid for the state as soon as they get pregnant, so a PHD student, who is simply a student, won't be. Disrupting your studies is more likely, although it is in real life, you have no right the project is interrupted during your absence. (In humanities this should be easier, as e.g. in engineering.)
