Probably best you pursue what you really want to do! You could do GCSE Maths at the same time as your access course which would save you a year. Even if you self teach and take the exam privately, this would reduce the amount of time you'd need to spend on maths leaving you more time for the access course.

If you do an access course at a local college you can resit your GCSE maths there, most colleges should allow that... well mine does.
I don't really think it matters too much about the age that you will be when you graduate, I'd rather be older and be happy with the course that I am taking than be younger and regret it.
