Just thought I'd start yet another thread on The Tannery I checked my accommodation track thing and it said i was allocated there and I nearly had a heart attack because it wasn't on the uni accommodation brochure or anything. But i looked at the website and called them up and it sounds really good - en suite, common room, self-catered, broadband, TV - everything i asked for really and it's an ok distance from the uni. Has anyone else been allocated there yet? Or know anyone who has stayed there before? I'd really like to know if the social scene is any good there and I'm scared that I'll be isolated from the other students because of it! The lady on the line said that the Leeds freshers will all be allocated together in the same flats and that the majority of tennants would be Leeds freshers. Just hope I get some awesome flat mates. One more q: does The Tannery have more or less international students than the other uni accommodations? It's not that I wouldn't mind mixing with international students at all but I just don't want to be alone on a floor with them because I'd feel pretty out of it. I've been allocated Block C.
Yeah she said it was basically all students, apparently 400 Leeds freshers or something, some students from Leeds Met and some second and third year students. I guess we'll have to wait and see, but the facilities at least seem wicked
I'm at the Tannery too-Block A! The actual place looks really nice, very modern and fresh, but just a bit worried bout the social side of things. It looks a bit in the middle of nowhere and with no bar on site i'm not sure where to go to meet people and hang out etc Does anyone know a bit more about distances into the city/Headingly/the nearest student pub or bar? Oh well, at least we can be unsociable together!!
jeez, I hope I haven't been placed in the anti-social block! It should be ok though, there's a common room or something for all residents to mix and what not, I'm just really nervous about who the hell I'm sharing with and whether or not I got a big flat because I'd like to share with 6 people as opposed to just 2
Does anyone know why the rent is for 50 weeks?? Its not exactly fair for someone whos only going to be at uni for 40 weeks! I dont particularly want to pay 10 weeks of rent whilst im not even there! Plus we have to pay £500 for deposit and utilities charge! All the real leeds places include the utilities charge! And whats this about £6.99 a week for using the internet plus £25!! thats bloody thevery!!!
I have no idea why they did that for the rent! It comes in slightly handy because I'm going to move in on the 15th but seriously, they seem to be pushing it. Then again I NEED MY INTERNET. If they asked me to pay £100 a week I would, even if I had to sell a kidney, that's how sad I am about keeping in contact with my mates back at home. Anyone staying at The Tannery add me on msn: [email protected] we can moan about the price together and if the worst comes to the worst and other people choose to be boring we can always go out and get trolleyed together.
I just had a look on the leeds website and it says there we can get tennancy lengths for 42 weeks, which is soooo much better!
Its growing on me now, i know i was very negative before, but in the pictures the rooms and sitting rooms/common rooms look ALOT nicer than alot of other leeds places. Plus because theres 400 of us Leeds people together it will feel more like a proper leeds halls rather than a mishmash of random students!
Still angry about the utilities and internet though!
There will be 300 University of Leeds allocated students out of the 500 residents at The Tannery. The other 200 will be either Uni of Leeds 2nd/3rd years or may be 1st years from the Met, the College of Art & Design etc etc.
The 200 students who are booking independently will have 50 week contracts and will have to pay a £250 utilities charge. But the 300 allocated by the University have 42 week contracts and the cost of the utilities is all included within the rent (which is why the rent is slightly more than the weekly cost of the 50 week tenancies)
But the internet unfortunately isn't included because the cost varies depending on your usage. The details are on our website. The UNITE website is worth looking at for additional pictures etc. but the information about rents, methods of payment contract lengths etc doesn't apply if you have been allocated by us.
When you get your contract you will get a welcome letter from UNITE which tells you stuff about the social activities they're planning - so don't worry, it's going to be as social as in the other residences!
Oh, and all the Leeds uni allocated students will be living together and your contract is with the uni rather than with UNITE, so if you really don't like it after you've moved in (which I doubt ) then you can always change to another Leeds Uni residence like everyone else can. And you have the services of a Leeds uni warden to give advice etc just like other Leeds Uni residents do.
Hope this explains stuff but do ask anything else you want to know.
I'm in the Tannery too - Block A. Was a bit disappointed not to be put in Devonshire which was my first choice but having looked at the details on the accom website im actually pretty chuffed! the Tannery looks really nice, the only things im a little annoyed about is that its en suite - i really wanted a standard room so i wouldnt have to pay extra money that i didnt need to, and having to pay for the internet! Grrrr.
Also its quite far away from the other halls of residence but i'm bringing a bike to uni so i should be able to cycle to and from my mates' halls of residence easily...
Hey Spoon 1, omg i asked for devonshire and not an en-suite too (i put it last on the options thing) ! Perhaps we are all the devonshire rejects hehe!
Same, I really didnt want en suite as i cant afford it, so i put it last on the form.
They chould have had another thing on that form where price came into consideration, as some of the leeds halls are quite expensive and some people may choose particular halls because they are cheaper.
hey! I'm so relived that i've found ppl living in the tannery! ive bin searchin the leeds met board n theres no1 lol i think im in block C.. havent checked proper yet tho lol any1 feel free 2 add me on [email protected] or www.myspace.com/emy_lou :0) xx
Hey awesome, I'm in Block C too! But if you're a Met student I doubt we'll be sharing a flat, I'm in 310A. There had better be a lift because I have a massive amount of stuff to shift, its insane.
