So I passed the interview, but there's no actual job?

In which case, why did they interview me?

    Dear X

Thank you for attending the recent interview and pre-test day for the post of ___ at BHospital.

After consideration of your application I am pleased to advise you have successfully passed the testing and interview process. Unfortunately we do not have a role in the Central Specimen Reception for you at this time.

We would like to keep your details on file and if a role becomes available you will be contacted. Providing you are still looking for employment in this role we would make a conditional offer of employment which would be subject to satisfactory pre-employment checks.

If you would not like us to hold your information for future positions please reply to this email to withdraw your application.

Thank-you again for your participation in the day and your interest in our company.

You passed, but someone was a better candidate.

You were of a standard that means they would normally employ you to do the job, however someone else was better suited. If a new position opens up, they want to know whether you're still interested or whether you want them to remove your details.

How is that an ouch? They're sincerely offering you the chance to jump the queue on any relevant upcoming positions. They have no reason to offer you this if they don't really like you and want you to work for them.

I thought it was just a polite way of saying, 'your interview wasn't a distaster, but still, no thanks.'
