I'm going into second year this sept/oct and by the end of my degree, I'm aiming for a first. I got a 2:1 at the end of this year but it wasn't a high one because quite frankly I slacked knowing that first year didn't count towards anything. I didn't put much effort in semester a but come semester b I put in a bit more effort.
So what can I do in second year to make sure I get a first? Ideally I want to finish second year with a high 2:1 or a 1st. Any tips? Thanks!

Hi, I've just completed an English lang & Lit degree with 1st class honours at the Open University.
My first tip would be to search for relevant ejournals via your uni library in addition to relying on the set reading list to improve your background knowledge when working on essays. That extra effort is always noticed by tutors.
Make sure you're referencing properly - it's easy to lose marks needlessly if references are not up to scratch.
A book that really helped me to improve my essay writing is Writing essays: a guide for students in English and the humanities by Richard Marggraf Turley - if you check out the reviews on amazon, you'll see that it helped several people to increase their grades.
Best of luck with the rest of your degree.
