I have a similar issue, I am really looking into doing English lit and/or Ancient History however want to get into a career in journalism/media, so some input on this would really help!

It's definitely possible - I know someone working in journalism with a pure Philosophy degree, you don't have to do pure English or Journalism. I think by far the more important thing is to get practice/experience writing for papers, magazines, etc.

Because of the skills you gain from English and Philosophy, it does enable you to have a career in journalism but like someone who does journalism as a degree; you'll need experience so that could be writing for the student magazine/paper, have work experience at a newspaper etc. Also having your own blog helps too

Of course you could? You should only take a Journalism degree if you're genuinely interested (for whatever ineffable reason--they seem to be me to degrees in 'shallowly understanding current events' compared with proper academic degrees) in its content: newspapers and magazines simply do not care about your degree, they care far more about the quality of your articles. The only degree they might be interested in is an MA in Journalism which would come after your degree in English and Philosophy if you chose to pursue one. Showing off your own writing ability, and grabbing any opportunity for work experience, interning, or getting articles published while still an undergraduate, are how you get into journalism and media--not, emphatically, through studying a course that happens to be called 'Journalism'.
