    Hello Guys,

I'm planning to move in to endcliffe for my first year. I would like to know if the internet is reliable, can you get wifi anywhere in the village? Are you allowed to use torrents? Do they monitor what you download or what sites you browse?

and finally, could you run a test on speedtest.net and post the results.

    Thank you very much

I don't live in endcliffe any more so I can't run a speed test but internet was absolutely fine when I lived there! You can get it pretty much everywhere in endcliffe
as for torrenting, you can torrent, but it's incredibly slow...

The internet is reliable, but you don't get the full speed due to sharing with everyone else on the network cluster.

That's the kind of result you'll get from anywhere on campus.

They monitor sites that have illegal content, and you can torrent. It'll be horrifically slow and if they do decide to catch people torrenting they'll just turn your internet off.

Does anyone know if we'll need to buy an Ethernet cable? I've heard some people suggesting that..?

I don't think so cos it's wifi everywhere. I know at some unis you have to have a wired connection, but don't think this is necessary at Sheffield

I lived in Endcliffe in the pre-wifi days so this might have changed but they used to provide an ethernet cable in every room. I'd kind of imagine they would have left them in there, with the recommendation that people plug their device in when they're in their rooms, although I dunno.

    Hi,

Wifi is available in all student buildings at Endcliffe Village, but depending on what time you will be using the internet you may wish to buy a cable in order to enable you to gain a more secure connection and increased speed. If you think you're likely to want to buffer things like films and music online at peak times, then it could be a good idea. However, they're fairly cheap and easy to get - you could wait until you arrive in Sheffield, and see how you get on.
