Does anybody have any good recommendations for things I could could use at home as temporary dumbells for squats. It'd only be for a month or until I begin my new job and join a gym, but I just want some substitutes I can use at home until then. I was thinking 2 litre water bottles?

Fill a backpack with stuff like rice/ pasta/ water bottles. Check your depth in a mirror, make sure you're going below parallel.
Most girls can easily do 10kg on their back, some can do a lot more.

You need more weight than what you have at home, and a way to get that weight onto your back. Don't worry about it, it's only a month before you join a gym.

If you don't have access to a barbell and weight then you're not going to be able to achieve much. As the person above said, for 1 month I wouldn't worry about it.
