Doughnut theory

I've been told to research this over the holidays but I can't find anything on it!!! I've looked on google/ the bbc but I just can't find anything. Can someone please help me?! I know it's about land-use and I know about the Burgess/Hoyt models. I also know that the picture is dougnut shaped  . But how do you draw it?!

Oh I don't know! Any help would be appreciated!

Doughnut theory - doesn't geography come up with some inspired names for theories? You're on the right lines with burgess, in that it follows a similar concentric pattern. The theory describes how the central business district (cbd) of a city is 'hollow' in terms of residential provision, and as such at night time becomes deserted, as it purely acts as a commercial core during 9-5 business hours. As a result, people in-migrate to the cbd during the day, but out-migrate into suburbs etc during the evening, leaving the city centre core 'hollow', like a doughnut.

To be honest, it's a pretty crude theory, as urban centre regentrification is increasingly encouraging people to live in the city centre - Birmingham's Mailbox and Urban Splash are pretty good examples of this, where disused offices etc have been turned into city centre apartments, to try and counteract the doughnut effect.

Hope this helps!

How deliciously modernist.
