After watching the whole match, I am not sure I can agree with the fact that Messi had to win the match yesterday to be considered the best ever. The way Maradona played, Messi was really not worse yesterday than Maradona played in the final. The difference being that Maradona's teammates at the time finished the chances given to them, Valdano's chance was just as easy to convert as Higuain's chance yesterday. Also even Beckenbauer at the time said his team was not ready, it was four years off being ready apparently, and this proved to be prophetic when they did win four years later. Their defence was definitely weaker than the defence Germany had yesterday.

The way I see it, Messi has one more chance in 4 years time. He will be 31, and surely that will realistically be last chance saloon for a WC win.

Who cares if he does win it or not? Ronaldo probably wont win one either and people just move on.

Lahm, Schweinsteiger, Klose etc are some of the outstanding players of their generation who won yesterday and all people can think about is Messi Messi Messi. Sick of it.

Because people want to be in the generation that witness the best player ever as part of their generation. With due respect to Germany, they are an outstanding team of WC players, but people wanted to see their footballing idol win. Also people have good will towards Messi purely because he is Messi, away from the footballing side of things he is just a very likeable guy unlike your Ronaldos.

I think he had to win to be compared to Maradona. Messi rolled the ball a few inches wide and missed the free kick. Both of these opportunities did not particularly concern the German defense and would have given Messi that elevated status.

As for best player ever, I don't think that the final should change too much.

He is 27 now, either this makes him a better player or he faces a further slump. The fact that he lost might not be the worst thing to happen in terms of his career, might give him that extra kick forward. I was not such a big fan before, but this WC and how he got back from injury and still did very well: has won me over. I don't really like Maradona as a person and that is why I would find it really fitting that Messi overtakes him. Whether that will happen is up in the air now. Winning last night was very important for a consensus view imo, because he would have won everything there is to win whereas Maradona has not. At the moment he is still on a par with Maradona and has not exceeded him.

Because they aren't as entertaining as Messi or Ronaldo.
