M266 - Motion on Journalistic Freedom in Egypt, TSR Green PartyThis House condemns the recent ruling in Egypt to imprison three Al-Jazeera journalists on charges of supporting terrorism. This House therefore fully endorses the campaign to free these journalists and subsequently calls upon Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to issue a pardon.

Without knowing the exact circumstances, it's a tentative aye.

What if the journalists really were undercover terrorists/agents? They must have a fair trial to decide. Do you have any links to article/non-biased information regarding exactly what happened?

These three journalists were arrested, tried and sentenced in relation to Al Jazeera's and Qatar's support of the Muslim Brotherhood, whether they were directly linked is another matter but it's clear that freedom doesn't extend to those that work for networks supporting terrorist organisations which is the way it should be.

Sisi has already admitted to his regret of not interfering when he had the chance but then he's supporting the democratic process whereby the president doesn't interfere in the judicial process, politically motivated or not, it isn't his place.

I find it frankly astounding that TSR Green Party want the president whom is trying to go by Western principle's to suddenly go back to Mubarak times and interfere with the judicial process

Surely, however, the mention of the word 'terrorist' alone can't be used to put completely innocent people under arrest?

How do you know they're "completely innocent"?

I'd support an immediate fair trial to alleviate the concerns of those such as Politisphere, but I lean towards supporting this motion.

They were arrested under suspicion of terrorism like any other criminal. All criminals are initially arrested under suspicion until a fair trial has take place. What if those journalists genuinely were terrorists? It's unwise to pardon them until a fair trial has taken place. Similarly it's unfair to sentence them until a fair trial has taken place.

Aye, a fair trial to confirm they are journalists need to be undertaken!
