M267 - Commemorating the Role of Women in the First World WarThis House believes that the role of women in the First World War, which indirectly was an early step towards women being given the vote and other equality with men, should be recognised alongside that of the men who fought and died.

As part of this recognition, this House supports the proposal to commemorate the centenary of the death of Edith Cavell, the Norfolk nurse who helped hundreds of Allied troops escape from German-occupied Belgium, with a commemorative £2 coin in 2015, and that the Government should support commemorations in her home community in Norfolk.

If I remember correctly, the Cavell coin was promoted as an alternative to a controversial Kitchener coin, which I don't believe is being stopped. While I obviously support the move, the issue behind the campaign still remains, so I'll abstain.

Aye! The combination of poor working conditions and unequal pay made work in the munitions factories long and painful - we need to recognise the hardships endured both home and abroad.

Indeed, even if the voting reform was a farce.
