Hey I've seen the post about which jobs earn over 50k and it just got me thinking-does it really matter? I know that money is obviously important in life but surely if you're happy doing a job you love that should be all that matters?

It depends on what makes you happy. I don't value relationships and find material goods make me happier, meaning money is essential.

There is no job I could love if it didn't pay well.

Does it matter? Try not having enough and you will know

Up to a point it matters.

As a student I lived extremely confortably on about £12k a year. Just over half of that went on rent and bills, that left £100 a week for groceries and going to the pub.

If you have enough to pay your rent and bills, groceries, beer, petrol and have a bit left over to save for holidays, then you have enough, and any extra doesn't really make you any happier.

Anything over £25-30k is more than enough for one person.

Well money = resources and you are given money to compensate for the fact that you aren't producing your own resources. This is why trading exists, so chicken specialists and vegetable specialists can concentrate on one area.

Of course it matters. Doing a job you enjoy for peanuts isn't going to help you buy a nice house, a good car, afford nice holidays, send your kids to good schools etc.

I'd rather do a job I don't particularly enjoy for lots of money than one I do enjoy but which pays a meagre salary. Obviously if you can find one that you do enjoy and which pays a lot then that's ideal but those jobs are few and far between.

For me money only matters to the extent that I can pay rent and live comfortably without worrying. Anything more than that is nice but doesn't really matter to me.

It matters if you've got a family relying on you.

Money is very important. People often don't realise this. Many relationships break down due to a lack of money so to me money is quite important.

This quote best sums up poverty:

"The day is long when you're poor. When you're a poor person 24-hours is like 10 years. You have a basic day that could have been nothin' but pleasant thought and relaxation, but you stressed 'cos you have a light bill and you stressed because you need diapers for your kid... that's a long day. That's 7 long days in a week if you're poor. When things are right you aren't thinking about time; time is leaving you... money is everything and that's just sad".

Money may not buy you happiness, but it can by you bacon [or anything else really, I just like bacon], which is pretty damn close.

Money may not buy you happiness, but I would rather cry in a Ferrari.

Money is really important for security...yes given with the economic situation and standard of living etc. but other than that it's really subjective unless you're really greedy and want more.

Money matters in so much as it delivers an improved standard of living. Once above 30k though it boils down to what ambitions you have.

Money is about as important as you want to make it, in my case, not very.

Yes, with money you can travel everywhere, buy luxury items, live in better areas, get better schooling, be in relationships with more attractive women.
Money is the single most important thing in the world, everyone is obsessed with it.
