I have 2 weeks until I start work and I am SO bored! I'd like a project that isn't going to cost much but that I can get stuck into and either create something useful or gain some sort of cool skill. Nothing too artsy because I'm more of a practical person and I don't really value art and decorative stuff.

    Ideas please? Thank you

Like some kind of craft project or some such? Hm. coursera.org do loads of online courses which are really interesting, but that's not really a practical thing.

What kind of stuff are you interested in?

Do you have any money? You can make something really cool with arduinos, and the feeling you get when you make something that can be controlled with buttons. Ah. So sexy.

You'll probably need around £30 for a kit, don't get the original Arduino, you can get a replicated copy for a lot cheaper off eBay, and it's exactly the same.

You can see some projects here:
    http://www.instructables.com/id/Arduino-Projects/

They also have instructions, you can follow them and replicate their projects. I think they are quite cool.

Wow that's so awesome - I've just signed up for a programmed cell death course because it's the subject of one of my dissertations!!

I like learning new things, and if it's a crafty project I would want to end up with something useful, e.g. creating an organizer or something
