Indeed, it is 70% PG's, but I wouldn't worry about it. The accommodation is divided into flats of 7, and it's more than likely the flat you're in will be almost (if not entirely) made of UG's.

Congrats on Maths on Econ (sounds like a good but hard course!).

The actual halls are quite nice btw, I have been down there a couple of times, there's a bar and the halls are in a very secure gated community. The halls themselves are about 3/4 mins walk from the tube and all in the journey to LSE by tube takes around 15mins tops. On foot, it takes about 30, or 25 if you walk really really quick.

What course are you studying just out of curiousity, you UG or PG?

Thanks

I contacted the warden on the flact selection issue and he made out that there werent efforts to place undergraduates all in the same flat whilst they do try to put a few together. Was this a statement made because in a few classes they have had say only 3 undergrads in a flat of 7 but the majority are placed in 100% undergrad flats?

What transport arrangements are people making?

I was planning on walking to LSE, anyone else?

Walking sounds fine to me... it would be even nicer to have a companion

See you soon folks!

PS: Any art, linguistics or cooking fans among you? I truly do not mean to sound as somebody who would dare to despise a good pint of bear with friends... :p:

I was going to walk (and probably will sometimes) but it is quite lengthy and knackering. However, it is actually a nice walk (you go over the thames etc, through central london - see quite a few sites). It is a long distance though however to do all the time.

My advice is, that if you go to the union building, you can get a form which will enable you to get a student All Zones travel card for only £14.40 a week, which is a bargain, considering how much usage you will get out of it.

When i looked at the transport for london site and its journey planner it didnt seem as if the tube was going to get me there any quicker.

Hi guys! I'm staying at GDS as well. I'm a lazy American so I guess I'm going to be taking the bus/tube

I heard from someone who lived there last year that the bus is much faster/more convenient than the tube. You have to switch lines to get to the LSE whereas there is a bus that goes directly to the school.

At least THREE buses (1, 188, 168), which you can get at the bottom of Great Dover Street at the Bricklayer's Arms roundabout. Unless there's one that's still closer to the halls themselves. I live very nearby, but not at GDS. But yeah, walking to the tube's a pain.

Also, it might just be worth it to buy a year pass, especially if you're an MSc student who will be staying over the summer to write your dissertation. Mine has worked out at roughly £1/day, which is the equivalent of one rush hour bus ride. Most days I'll have a bus ride home and back, at a minimum. Plus, the student Oyster card discount only applies on monthly and yearly passes.

Doing the walk from GDS to Borough was only about 5mins tops when I did it? And the tube journey was extremely straightforward -

Northern Line from Borough - Embankment and at Embankment change to the Circle Line to Temple - takes about 10-15 mins tops all in.

Easy journey and only £14 a week for a student travel card...whats the problem? Given daytime traffic, thats deffo quicker than the bus!

EDIT: Ps, I'm doing a degree in Economics, which I believe doesn't entail writing the dissertation over the summer...does anyone know if thats correct? Heard it was the 6000 word extended essay due in by early June or something??

Thanks, Sin55. I'm doing Law LLB.

I heard the bus takes 15-20 mins to LSE. Is this correct? I prefer the bus to the tube b/c of the pollution. Ever blown your nose after taking the tube?

No worries. I'm just attached to the buses, because the walk to Borough would be longer for me by another 5-10 min., compared to the bus stop across the street. Walking wouldn't cancel out the traffic, unless Waterloo Bridge's really stuffed up and I end up walking anyway. :-)

Still, get more than a week's travel card. The discounts are better the longer they last.

ETA: yup, 15-20's about average. It's what I count on, unless it's rush hour or something annoying like that.

Maybe. I'll get buses back at night for sure - not walking down GDS when the sun goes down!

Having said that though, the london travel card covers buses as well as tubes. It also covers the boat that burns down the Thames doesn't it??
Reply 17
Just a discount on the boats, I'm afraid, but a rather nice one!

 I've never come across anyone using that argument to prove pollution levels before...

Outside of peak hours, the tube is ok. However, in peak hours I'm with her on this, it is pretty disgusting - you feel just like you're breathing in pure stale dirt and sweat!
