Why do people lie online?

I don't understand why people lie online like their name... Or not ell people their name or age... It's annoying when I try to make friends online and they don't tell me their name.... "Call me X."

Well, for one people don't like giving out their personal details out of a fear of stalkers etc. This is the internet you know!

Also though, many people see the internet as a way to escape the troubles of their corporeal existence. The internet is great in that you can throw away the things that define you normally as you, allowing interaction outside of your established identity. It's alike to an elaborate role-play.

No idea. People accuse me of it all the time but I have nothing to hide.
Because there's lots of creepy people out there

I think that's a HUGE generalization...
Maybe they don't want to be known by their real name online? For personal/security reasons.

I think that's silly. How do you make friends without knowing about them?

You don't have to know their name to get to know them.

I never understand why people have issues with saying their name or age. I mean there's probably a thousand others with the same name ._.

I know! It's so annoying! What will they think I'm going to do? Hunt them down and kill them?!

In no way is that a generalisation. First of all, she did not target a specific group of people, that's like saying it's a generalisation to say "there are a lot of annoying people out there". It's a fact. You get creeps everywhere in the world. Furthermore, look at the number of people that were arrested in a crack down on paedophillia because of pornographic images of children the other day. I'm not saying people should lie..I'm not saying they shouldn't.

I don't do that, it's their name or nothing. I hate calling people names that aren't their names.
Lying's one thing, but I'd say it's fairly normal to not want to tell people your name, where you live etc

Some people see the internet as an escape from the reality they live in, a chance to reinvent themselves for the better. So they act how they wish they could act in daily life to possibly gain more friends.

To be honest, I have gotten to know a few people online (none off TSR though) who I have given them my email address so we can keep in touch, and so far we have. Also many people on the internet don't lie, they just tend to not tell the whole story or the truth.

Try making friends irl if you want people not to lie. Even then they probably still will as no one would know if you're trustworthy or not.
