I was wondering whether there were any particularly respected or known or 'good' (in all respects of the word!) work experiences or internships for entry into Finance / Accounting at university?

you need to get work experience at a bank which is extremely difficult if its a top one or at an accountancy firm

A bank is one example, there are many other ways to gain good experience - if interested in AC as a career don't fixate on the top 4, thousands upon thousands of accountants gain experience elsewhere

I did work experience in barclays bank couple weeks ago.
I dont know if you know this before but i am assuming you never heard this before
there is programme run by barcays call lifeskills. there are couple of steps u need to follow
step 1 - google lifeskills by barcays and creat an account.
step 2 - complete some questionaire to earn 250 points.
step 3 - after u earn 250 points, there must be a certificate u can print it out and show it to your school tutor
ur school teacher may heard this before and have an account but if not, u need to explain to ur tutor about the programme and he need to creat an account. then he can select nearest branch and contact the manager to arrange dates for you
it seems a lot but it worth it.
my school tutor had no idea about this so i had to explain to him.
it is hard to get work experience in bank in these days.
if you want more work experience, go to any accounting firms in your area and ask them if you can do work experiece. thats how i got work experience in an accounting firm
hope this helps
