Pro-Russian rebels have allegedly shot down a plane killing 300 civilians and the Ukrainian government says that they have evidence that Russia had provided the rebels with weapons.

We all heard about that incident but terrorism takes place on a far greater scale. Western media reports but a fraction of terrorist attacks...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...ncidents,_2014

We seem to live in a world where people get killed on a mass scale and nothing is ever done about it. The world we live in is a truly disgusting place, governments and world organisations seem too worried of losing public support that war is rarely declared and acts of terrorism go unpunished. Terrorist groups know that they will get away with it so do it time and time again.

    The West v The Rest.

Who would win? It can't be too long until Paddy Power start offering odds for it.

Firstly, the post-war period is marked by precipitous decline of inter-state conflict, and the rise of irregular, non-state and intra-state conflict. That said, aggregate levels of conflict and their casualties have fallen to historic lows, despite the tendency - as here - for apocalyptic claims, which are constant across history. Secondly, I don't see any conceivable path to a Cold War revival or a Russian-NATO conflict.

Well Putin is one of those old fashioned USSR type ruskies, so a part of me is expecting a war against them. But logic states that: it's Russia the best thing for you is to run away. If there is a war Russia will win, but I think that we are either too smart/pussy (can't accuse politicians of being smart) to do it.

If there's one thing that we should have learned from the Cold War, it's that the old Soviet Union was actually incapable of sustaining a war. And those were the days when they had a concerted defence effort and experienced soldiers and officers.

Its unlikely since Putin has given no evidence that he's prepared to invade an aligned state and the likes of Ukraine and Georgia have pretty much no air force or navy. It should be noted however that we are engaged in proxy wars with Russia and Iran (ironically we are allying against ISIS but fighting against Assad).

I can potentially see a face off against whereby some western countries eventually have troops to stop Russia pushing too far but its hard to see either side firing.

*We've always lived in a world where people get killed on a mass scale..."

It's only now the media gives us more awareness of it.

If we exclude nukes then id love to know what makes you think they'd win.

The Russian air force is old meaning it can be detected, half its planes don't have pilots or parts. The UK and France alone have near 500 strike craft made after the Cold war which are more advanced.

Same with the Russian Navy. Barely anything post cold-war and the strongest they have is the equivalent of type 42's. Our type 45's can track 2000 targets and take on 5 type 42's a piece.

On the ground Russia has numbers so you'd expect parts of Europe to fall but its unlikely they'd pass a line from Poland to Italy.

With overwhelming air and sea superiority Europe alone would be waving the flag over Moscow in 6 months.

You forget that they have the home ground advantage. If we try to invade we will freeze to death. Otherwise Hitler and Napoleon would have managed.

Instead of attacking countries, the powers have just found it easier to isolate them. Unless it's in a country's vested interest to attack. I don't think anyone will gain from an invasion of Russia, let's just cut them off like we did with Iran

That's more relevant to occupation than the initial invasion since its unlikely it would take long once war broke out.

Also Hitler attacked during the coldest winter for 300 years, that was not a normal winter. We also have a better ability to stay warm nowadays.

The only thing to get us out of this horrible world is to go back to Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and it's a very simple process. All we have to do it chant...

    Hare Krishna
    Hare Krishna
    Krishna Krishna
    Hare Hare

    Hare Rama
    Hare Rama
    Rama Rama
    Hare Hare

    and be happy.
Well it scares the death out of me, the Ruskies must be ****ting their pants.

No I don't think so, a third world war would involve nukes & nobody wants that the earth would be obliterated.

Russia would get absolutely dominated on their own. The issue is not knowing who would take their back. If they ended up with China, North Korea, Iran etc... Then things would get difficult.

Then of course, nukes would most likely be used. The USA and EU will have a ridiculous secret stock pile so they'd be alright. But of course, millions/billions of people would die and we'd be thrown into an apocalyptic Armageddon, so. Yeah. Probably not the best idea!

The Germans invaded Russia 22nd June 1941.(Gosh don't winters start early in Russia! )

All winters are very very cold in Russia. Haven't you heard?

We may be able to keep warm better but we still can't make the supply line into Russia any shorter.

Every invading army into Russia has thought that this time they could do better than the last attempt. Any invading army into any country has to cope with the fact that people defending their own country fight harder than people thousands of miles from their home.

We should have learnt from the Vietnam fiasco.
