M270 - Motion on the Awarding of Honours, The Hon. Barnetlad MP
This House believes that honours should not be awarded to any current Government minister or one who has served in a ministerial position within the previous five years. An exception should be made for those over 80 with both birth parents still alive.

Why the "both parents still alive" bit?

No. 1) I share O133's query and 2) What if someone who would feasibly have received an honour after 5 years were to die?

    No, certainly not!
A good point raised by O133: it is unclear whether the person can get one if they are over 80 WITH both parents still alive, or whether they must just be over 80, or whether both parents must have passed. In the last situation, what if the person was passed into care of the State at a young age - who are the 'parents'?

Maybe scrap the last sentence and the 'within the last 5 years' part. Government ministers are doing their job. They receive a salary and a gold-plated pension, they don't need honours on top of that for doing what they were elected to do. Most cut corners and grandstand when it comes to election times to make it look as if they have done more than they really have.

Abstain. I'd like to see the honours system gone in its entirety.

I've been alive the equivalent of 161 years in dog House of Commons, I think I'm applicable.

Just to annoy O133, if I ever muddle my way near PM, I'm going to do PM's TSR's Honours.

If you give Jonny Wilkinson the knighthood he should have had in the birthday honours then I won't whinge too much, in TSR where you can't pay a bribe etc. then it's a bit of fun.
