I am travelling to Asia soon and wanted to how to avoid excessive charges whilst there. I have an iPhone 4s and will be using my phone to check emails, Facebook, Skype, text messages and taking pictures.

Turn off data roaming to prevent use abroad, stick to WiFi. If possible get a sim card when you're out there and use that at very least for your web access.

    This.

Also, turn on Airplane mode and minimize downloads. Carrier's will charge for excessive download usage. Massive bill after using Vodaphone and the app '12 Days'.

Avoid sending text messages if possible, as they'll be quite expensive. If you're connected to wifi then use Facebook/WhatsApp etc instead which will be free.
