How to get into emergency medicine?

Hi guys.. I am just a little bit confused on how to get onto doing emergency medicine? What is the application process?

You'll have to apply for medicine at a university, do your foundation years and then go onto specialise in emergency medicine from there onwards. It takes 7/8 years to finish basic training, and up to 10 years from then to specialise :smile:

Right so once I have completed my undergraduate degree in medicine... After that I will have to do a degree to specialise in emergency medicine?

There are multiple positions involved in treating emergencies. You could be talking about paramedics, nurses, doctors, or something else - which is it?

You have your 5 (or sometimes 6 depending on if you do a foundation year or intercalate) years at med school, then your two foundation years and then start your training to specialise.

I don't know how long it takes to specialise in emergency medicine, but to give you a rough idea of how long it might take, I think speciality training varies between 3-8 years (a GP being 3 years, a surgeon being 8 years), so any number of years in between that.

I could be wrong on any of these points, this is just what I've discovered through researching! :smile:

You don't need to do another degree.

FY1 and FY2 - everyone does this

ACCS - CT1-3 years (+ pass MCEM)

Emergency medicine specialty training - ST4-ST6 (+ pass FCEM)
