Anyone have any idea what the catering is like at Chester? Types of foods, times of resident 'meals' etc?...I have no idea and it is just adding to the worry of everything!

I dont know what the actual meals are like but i think they offer a lot of choice in the types of food available. There seems to be quite a few different places on campus where you can go for a good choice of food! can't wait to go to uni!!!!!

Oh dear!

Nicci - but don't students under fully catered accomodation have to eat in the specific dining hall? or can you go anywhere?

i was semi-catered this last year, so i had 2meals a day 5days a week. you are deignated a certain dining hall in which you eat. for the first few months, the food is ok, its edible! ... but after a month of so it becomes so repetative and tastes like cardboard! by the end of the year i was stil paying 4meals, but cooking my own food it was that bad! -sorry guys!!! if i had a chance to redo this past year, i would def choose self-catered! the meals you are given are not, in my opinion, worth the money!
No need to apologise! Best to be honest .

Ah well. Is there much of a choice of food? Enough healthy options? & do you have to stick to specific dining times? (sorry for all the questions! Hope you don't mind.)

I guess it's actually better for me to be catered anyway as i am diabetic and probably wouldn't eat properly otherwise! (i also get a mini fridge provided in my room to store insulin *ahem - diet coke* in!)

there are 2main canteens, one on campus, one in the Rigg Building (next to John Milton), the latter is wher i ate. i only had lunch and tea, lunch time was 12pm-1.30pm (altho it opened at 11.30am for jst sandwiches). At lunch there was 2main options, you get a hot meal, or a sandwhich and chips. There is always a vegetarian option which i saw as the healthy option because the meats were so proccessed and fatty!!! Tea time was 5pm-6.30pm, and that was just a hot meal... again, they had a vegie option. At lunch and tea you can also get either a cold dessert, a hot dessert, a yoghurt or a piece of fruit! i must admit, the desserts are good!!... esp the syrup sponge&custard.. we used to love the days when that was on the menu!!! the way its done is that you chose the main part of your meal, ie.meat, or the vegie option, or whatevers on, then you chose your veg, then your type of potato. They have a varied of foods, sometimes burgers, pastrys, pastas, curries, stews, etc... so i suppose there is quite a lot of choice, but none of them ever looked good to me!!! lol!
... i dont mind answering questions at all... you got any more? about anything?

and you sound like my other friend who has diabeties.... he drinks about 3ltrs of diet coke a day!!!

just wondering... i'm in catered accomodation... Do they provided kitchen facilities in halls for us to use, say if we are realli picking and dont like the food??

it depends which halls your in... the majority of them have a small kitchen shared by a lot of ppl, with drink making facilities, and some of them have an oven. but you can always take your own stuff, ie. a george forman, a microwave, etc!
Do they tell you where you can eat?
And how does it work, do you have a card to show that you are full/semi catered?
Reply 10
yeh, you are designated a dining hall in which you must eat all your meals. And yes, you get a meal card which you have to show every meal time, they have different colours for different halls which shows what type you are, ie. full or semi!
Just one hall?
Quite limited...meh, knew there was a reason I wanted semi
But hey hum a rooms a room!

yeh, there are 2 main halls, one on campus which is used for all the halls on campus, and the other at the Rigg building which is used for those in places such as Kingston Lodge, Eversly House, Scotia House, John Douglas Court (THE BEST ONE!!) .. etc! but you cant go to the other dinning hall! BUT... if you're fully catered and live in one of the halls off campus, you eat in the one on campus on a weekend!

Sarah do you have any idea what Eversley House is like? I've been placed in there but never even heard of it before and nobody on this site at the mo has been placed in same house as me. Also will it just be all first years in with me? is it single sex? sorry for questions lol xx

yeh its just first years, and im not certain about the sex actualy-sory! altho i had a friend called james in there last year, so i know it had guys in last year, but that means nothing, my accom had guys in the year prev and i was in single sex!!! its right next door to kingsley lodge... its about a 5-7min walk from uni. apparently its quite nice and quiet!!!
Hmmm.

I don't know if I feel better or worse reading this thread.

I got stuck with fully catered but I wanted semi catered. I think my parents are pleased that I've got catered cos they know all I'll live on is crisps and soup but hmmm. Yeah.

I suppose it's only for a year though isn't it.

Do you get to meet other people from different houses then? Or do you have to stick with your house?

Ha, aren't you getting lumbered with questions?

Btw, I think I wanted John Douglas Court, it seemed the best. All of the accomodation at Chester looks fair decent though. It all looks quite modern. Or am I wrong? Is there any house I wouldn't want to live in?

i was in JDC, and i genuinly do think it was the best accom... and im not just sayin that cz i was ther!! it was classed as quiet accom, so i actually managed to get sleep! but my flatmates were still ace and not too geeky, and we still went clubbing, etc! i found it a great balance. i had friends in... kinsley lodge, eversley house, astbury house, fisher house, hollybank, scotia house, margarent house, parkgate road... i think thats all!! but i def wouldnt have wanted to live in fisher or astbury... my friends in there complained so much about the noises in the early hours of the morn! and the rooms were tiny... and i mean tiny! :s-smilie: -sory to any1 whos in there!! to be honest tho, if you get friends in other accom you can spend time with them in their rooms!!!!! most of the accom is modern, but some is just awful!! but yeh, JDC and Hollybank are the most modern, and nicest!

yeh you will def meet ppl from diff houses... you eat with about 5 other houses so you get the chance to meet ppl at the canteen, and you also meet ppl on your course, and clubs if you join anyone!

to be honest tho, whatever accom you get it ... just make it your own and youl love it!
Aw, thank you so much.

You've actually made me feel a lot better about it all.

So, being in John Milton, i will eat in the canteen off campus right?
