--Help for all those with acne - please read!--

Well, as most of you know, I've suffered with acne pretty much day in day out since I was 10. I tried just about everything with the exception on Accutane. About a month ago I reached my wits end and paid a visit to my dermatologist. What he told me to do has changed my life considerably - with the exception of a few tiny and hardly noticable spots which arrived at the time of my period, I have been pimple-free.

I'd been on the pill since I was 13 - I'm almost 20 now. That only had limited success. However, in addition to the Pill, he prescribed 100mg of an antibiotic called Minocin. (I'd taken 50mg of the drug in my early teens, independent from the Pill) He also (and I personally think this was the crucial bit) told me to completely stop consuming milk and any milk products, however, small the quantity - so no butter, cheese, pizza, etc but also things like biscuits, cakes and chocolate which contain small but potentially harmful (for those with this problem) quantities of milk.

So why stop milk? According to the phamplet my doctor gave me...

The reason that milk products cause acne is because milk contains hormones that "turn on" oil glands. The cows that give the milk are pregnant and milking most of their lives. These hormones are not injected into the cows - they are natural hormones that cows make during every "menstrual" cycle, but during pregnancy these hormones are produced continuously at high levels and so are found in all cows' milk.

I didn't believe it at first but (fingers crossed, touch wood) it seems to have worked when nothing else did. Talk to your GP before considering it, and ask him/her about the antibiotic too.

Good luck

I'd rather have a few spots than to have an impractical diet and not be able to eat hardly anything I like! Well done you for managing it though.

Yeah, I agree with that statement and it actually works if you stick to it! i had lots of spots since I was 13 andI had to go through all these pills and antibotics and none of it worked; I was soo sick of it.

I decided to use this diet of limiting milk, wheat, chocolate and anything fatty, these kind of food do raise up your hormone level and therefore causes more oil on your skin and results in gaining more spots. I found out this information from a doctor food magazine which is very helpful!

I also drink plenty of water and eat lots of fresh fruits each day. Now I hardly get spots and it's worth a try to people to suffer acne, but you'll have to be motivated in it... it's tempting it crave for sweets and fatty foods.

Now you will have other problems like lack of protein lol, but if you have found a way congrats

Nope, I haven't had anything with milk in it for a month. To be fair, you can always scrape cheese toppings off etc and you'll be OK (lol :s: ) It is hard but worth it. If you are going to uni this year, maybe start it then, when you'll have more control over what you eat.

I assume you mean calcium...

Thing is you shouldn't...there are a number of non-milk sources of calcium. Vegans are healthy but don't drink milk! Neither can those who are lactose intolerant. This link shows stuff you can eat to get calcium. http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/calcium.htm

I said protein cause its in milk and cheese, if you don't eat meat (I don't know if you do) then you might be lacking it, I don't know..maybe there is some truth to the saying 'you are what you eat' then.

Nope I eat meat, in any case if I didn't things like kidney beans/lentils have protein.

but you can stick to chicken and poultrey.
I have bad acne for a year now and i have actually tried everything and the acne kept coming back. Until my doctor told me to wash in the mornings with salicylic acid (present in many face washes) then wash it off then put on glycolic acid (also in many face washes etc) leave each one on for about 2 minutes then wash off. Then after all this apply moisturiser cream and you're good for the day.

Before you go to bed at night wash face with salicylic acid again then wash off. Then gt a cold ice cube and rub on the affected area until the skin is cold and wet then apply benzoyl peroxide cream. Then get a cool pack and put it onto the area for 10 minutes (this is meant to cause the cream to get deep into the pores the cold also has the effect on constricting blood vessels so BP is taken up more). This does actually work but you have to be doing it for 6 weeks. So far its working.

I'm glad you found that your milk diet is working. Good luck

For women, the pill 'Dianette' is supposed to help with acne.

Thanks for the info!
As it happens, Id have acne for years, been to my Gp and tried Benzamycin+ Dianette but that still didnt work. I do drink a lot of tea though with milk (along with water), probably about 3-4 cups a day! I dont really have a lot of milk apart from chocolate, so I might try and cut it out to see if it works.

Doesnt always help though, plus its use is sometimes limited by GP's, I had to stop taking it after 2-3 years as my GP refused to give me any more.

Yeah, I read a few years back that milk is actually pretty harmful in terms of general health so I can quite believe this.

I don't think I could give up dairy products - good on you for doing so though, especially if it has made you feel better about yourself. Well done.

Did you eat a lot of dairy products before? I really love milk, cheese and chocolate and don't get me started on pizza...

its true, dairy is the enemy. i found this out a couple of years ago on the internet. cut out dairy and it works.
