Apart from the experience of creating and presenting a poster which is a good skill, is there any advantage to having presented a poster? Do they count for anything in applications/ CV later down the line?

Yep, looks nice on the CV, particularly if the abstract is published in a journal..

My understanding is that it depends. For example, if you are applying for cmt, they count for points (see http://www.ct1recruitment.org.uk/the...n-scoring.html). Similarly, other specialities give some credit for posters. You could use them to show evidence of audit, research experience or commitment to a speciality to tick those boxes on person specifications of different specialities.
