When employers ask to see your GCSE certificates (or certificates in general) do they photocopy them or just look at them and hand them back to you?

Would appreciate answers to this, thank you.

Usually photocopy them. But then I've been showing them to employers that have a statutory requirement to keep employee records with that degree of detail. I guess if they were just asking to see them to check for the truth of your qualifications, then they might not copy them. Mostly, if employers ask for certificates its because it's important to them, so they will photocopy and put on your employment records.

What kind of jobs usually have this statutory requirement?

Anything in education or working with children ie with safeguarding requirements, but I don't have a comprehensive list.

If employers specify specific academic requirements for a job, then they usually check certificates with the successful applicant.
