Suppose it depends whether you're there over the holidays??
Reply 2
just the academic year. you won't be in halls over Summer will you?
Reply 3
I'm doing just the academic year, as far as I'm aware I won't need it during the summer.
Reply 4
Oh, we can stay in halls over summer? I though we got kicked ou then!
Reply 5
Yeh, i think you might be able too but you'd better check.
Reply 6
You might be able to at some halls if you request to stay longer than the allocated time. For a short time maybe. But i'm pretty sure most halls make you leave on the day after the last day of term. Halls like Badock and Wills will definately ask you to leave as they use the hall for conferences over the summer.

Just get the 55 pound Resnet. I doubt you'll need it longer than the cheaper package allows.

Cheers guys. Btw i'm staying at winkworth and the contracts for halls/student houses are 38 weeks so pointless.

Does anyone know what kind of speeds you get?
Reply 9
Theres a table of the different speeds you get here:

looks pretty sweet. so is it right to assume the SB halls will have 100Mbit speeds by oct '06?
Reply 11
....not sure. Where did you find that out?

Last year it was all 10mbs within hall. I can't see them ripping all that hardware out over the summer. In all the halls...would be rather expensive.

In one area (Woodland Court) the ResNet network currently operates at 100 Mbit/sec. This makes little practical difference at the moment. We will be introducing more 100Mbit connections to other areas during 2005/06, ready for the start of the 2006/07 academic year.

fair enough! but i still think you'll be lucky to get 100mbit in SB next year, its gonna be a slow change over.
Resnet is pretty damn fast (I don't do computer speak, all I know is it's very fast!). Defo get the £55 subscription- the other is a waste of money as you won't be there!

i read on the bristol wesbite that they are upgrading 'all' accomodation to 100Mbit speeds ready for the 2006/2007 acedemic year. though i heard it sumewhere else before. should improve p2p between students but will do nothing for your internet speeds
Reply 16
lol i smell dc++ lurking.
Reply 17
Is there an intra-hall(s) sharing network??

Or is it sought out and destroyed?
Reply 18
should be an intranet which allows p2p sharing. i know Durham allows it...

There was a DC hub up for a while this year, but it got shut down. I think there was sporadic service after the shut-down. Basically the ResNet people don't just give everyone laissez faire over the network and are conscious that they could be liable. They didn't seem to seek out trouble though.
