CARDIFF MEDICAL SCHOOL APPLICANTS 2015

With August fast approaching, it's time for medical applicants to start freaking out about the upcoming UCAS application cycle. Anyone thinking of applying to Cardiff is free to use this thread to have a moan/rant/cry, and to ask questions about the course, the university or the city itself.
We have the amazing Stephen Fry telling you how awesome Cardiff University is - I don't think you need any other reason to apply.

If you are interested in seeing the academic prowess of previous applicants to Cardiff University, the thread for 2014 entry can be found here and the Medical Applicants Stalking Page for Cardiff 2014 here.

Admissions

The Admissions Policy for 2015-2016 entry can be found here with FAQ's which includes information about how GCSES are ranked for your application. The School Selection Procedures also condenses the information into one page for lazy people.

The Curriculum

Here is a video regarding the new C21 Curriculum.
For the more keen, here is the Student Handbook which goes through the curriculum for first year regarding assessments, subject panels, SSCs and placements. Please note that the information for years two to five is not relevant due to the implementation of the new course. I will update this link once the Handbook for the new course has been provided.

If you want to know more about a typical week for a first year medical student at Cardiff including a copy of a timetable, Emlou456 very kindly posted this in the 2014 thread:

Spoiler

There are a number of medical students from Cardiff lurking around so feel free to ask questions; we will do our best to help you or point you in the right direction.
The UCAS cycle can be a very stressful time - hopefully by chatting to other students and understanding what is expected from you, you will feel more confident with your application and give yourself the best chance to receive an offer.
Good luck!

Is 5A*s and 9 As enough to get me into Cardiff??? :s-smilie:

Well using the GCSE points system you would get a score of 23 points, which I would say is a little risky for applying since the cutoff was 25/27 last year, although this changes every year depending on the cohort - so it could go down.

Good luck with your application

Applying to cardiff for 2015 entry. For those of you that received offers from cardiff, would you recommend leaving spaces and starting the a new paragraphs on the next line. If am considering this but the only problem is my character are just about 4000 and I would have to cut out quite abit of content to be able to do this
Hey guys I applied here last year and got rejected after interview :frown:. I'm probs gonna re-apply here again because I really liked the uni and I thought everyone was really friendly. If you have any questions of what the admissions/interview was like last year I'd be more than happy to answer them.

When writing your personal statement, did you start each paragraph on a new line or continue uninterrupted. I will have cut out some important bits to make space for paragraphs, so I am really confused whether I should space it or not.

I didn't completely write uninterrupted. I used paragraphs but I indented them instead of spacing them. It's up to u. Using paragraphs will make the statement look nicer and easier to read but I doubt Cardiff will score statements based on that. U also gotta remember that u can't write everything. U just need to put something good on the table so that they invite u for interview. Hope that helps.

I don't think we are allowed to indent as UCAS removes it. So, that is not an option.

Really? In that case I probably ended up using uninterrupted then. But I doubt they'll mark you down coz it's not as nice to read so if you really want to include that stuff you've had to miss out then go uninterrupted.
When Cardiff say they don't look at AS grades, do they really mean that? Tempted to apply with 2As and 2Bs with an A*AA prediction + 11A*s at GCSE but worried the 2Bs would mean they would automatically reject me :/

As long as you have an AAA prediction (which you do) that is what matters. I know a few people in my year who got AABB at AS and I personally applied with AAAB at AS.

Your GCSEs are fantastic as well.

With 11A*s you'll get 27/27 points. As long as your personal statement is alright you'll deffo get an interview.

Heyx
I have 6A*'s (in the relevant subjects) and 4A's and gsce
and its kinda awkward because everyone here does A level , whilst I do IB
I have a prediction of 38/hopefully 39)
do you think my results will be enough to cut it for an interview ?

Hiya,

I've seen that you got into Bristol University studying medicine.
I'm really keen on Bristol and was wondering if you think I'm a good enough applicant.

I have 5A* 7A and a B(in health and social) A* in bio and chem

AS levels (AABC)
B in chem - retaking a module, and a C in history.

I have a low UKcat.

Also have a range of work experience, shadowing a doctor, a specialist pharmacist, volunteering at fundraising events for the prospect hospice and also working part time in a care home.

Was wonder if you think I'm a strong applicant for Cardiff?
thankyou

I was rejected from Cardiff post interview last year, and so I was wondering if Cardiff accept reapplications from people in my position. I achieved A*AA at A2. Are reapplicants treated equally to those who are applying first time round?

I applied to Cardiff for Medicine last year and didn't get in. Can I reapply this time?

Yes, you can reapply as long as you meet our minimum entry requirements for the year you are applying.
