    NaCl + H2O --> NaOH + HCl ?? Sorry just doesn't look right..

    And does NaCl melt with decomposition? What exactly is the definition of decomposition?

    No. It ionises to form aqueous Na+ and Cl- ions.

    NaCl + aq --> Na+ + Cl-

    Sodium Chloride is an ionic substance and therefore dissolves in water. The equation is usually written as:

    NaCl(s) + aq -----> Na+(aq) + Cl-(aq)

    That isnt right, the equation for the reaction of NaCl and water is

    NaCl (s) + H2O (l) --> Na+ (aq) + Cl- (aq)

    well yes and no, that is the accepted equation as they are aqeous ions, ie in water

    technically should be "+ aq" ... so you get the dissociated ions. Sodium chloride's not REACTING with the water, because "+ aq" just means "a bucket load of water" bascially..!
