P.A.T testing???

Just got my accomodation thingy through (i'm in treflyone ) and another trees-worth of forms and stuff fell out too...

One of them says that we have to have our electrical appliances tested in our first week or something... to make sure they r suitably safe.

So do we actually have to do this??? And also do they litterally mean every appliance we bring, including phone chargers??? and lights???

confusing....

I'm wondering about this myself! I assume they mean everything, especially things like computer power cables and lamps - things that will be on a lot, if not continuously. As to actually having to do it, the answer is probably yes, Aber seem to be red-hot on health and safety...

Maybe they send round an electrician in the first week to test everyone's appliances room by room?

Youwon't nned a lamp, there's lamps in your room.

Basically, anything that's not relatively new (up to a year old) needs to be PAT tested to make sure that it is electrically sound and won't cause a fire. They don't send roung electicians - you have toi take your stuff yourself to get it done. They do it in Penbryn during Freshers' Week, Aand they charge you (£3) per item I think) You will need EVERYTHING that's not new tested, PC power cables, mobile phone chargers, extension leads (which you will need if you are in Penbryn as there's only one socket in each room - at least there was with mine, and you can't have the ones with plug directky into your soceket if you know what I mean)

I don't know of anyone being disciplined for noit having anything PAT tested though.

Well they never checked my stuff, and a lot of it wasn't PAT tested (tho IIRC, my dad did look over them). Too darn expensive. Not so bad for a fresher tho, as I'd imagine that some of your stuff you've got new, so won't require it.

That's true. This laptop is less than a year old, as will be my kettle and Palm charger, but the only things that won't be are my phone and MP3 player charger (and possibly the multi adapter). Is it worth getting these checked?

I dunno, you can if you want but I didn't :p:

Just hope nothing that hasn't been tested blows up :p:

Don't we all

OMG no way can I get all my electrical stuff tested! that'd cost loads - its a tad on the pricey side £2.50 an item, i could understand 50p! Mite just steal some "Appliance safety test" stickers off the back of some plugs at work and say they've already been done! could potentially save a bit of dosh!
Everything in these packs seems to be "send a cheque off for x amount" lol - squeeze us while we have cash!!!

ok, thank you

i think i'll be ok actually, don't really have much electrical stuff... laptop is new, so just a phone charger i should think.

it upsets me that i'm not allowed a toastie maker! i LOVE toasties. i guess i'll just have to get some of those toastie making toaster bags...

also where it says use aerosols with care - how controlling do these people want to be???!!! :p:

i know, i know... fire regulations and stuff. but. *sigh*

Because aerosols set off the smoke detectors in your room (as does steam from kettles, hence why youre not allowed kettles). I found that out the hard way

Perhaps I haven't read what I've been given well enough, but I don't know any of this stuff! We're not allowed toastie makers? Why?! And what will they do to us if they find us with them?

Seriously, all these rules and regs. sound a bit tedious. Is it really as bad as it's beginning to sound? :frown:

I'm pretty sure those sorts of items are forbidden in students rooms, I can't remember reading that they're banned from the kitchen area.

Ye actually just read it again and the only thing, cooking wise, which is forbidden is a deep fat fryer.

Phew! Toasties are essential winter snacks. I love coming home on a cold, dark evening and seeing what exciting fillings I can make from the contents of the fridge!

I grumble that I have a summer and winter weight - I think I've discovered the route of the problem :s:

Or a chip pan.

Basicaly, if you want to make homemade fish and ships, you'll have to grill'em, as the fire rsik ism supposedly too great (even though most deep fat fryers have a temperature contol)

Having said that, when my flat mate set the fire alarm off, it was due to him leaving his spaghetti to boil dry. Needless to say we were slightly annoyed, especially as the flat stank of burning for days afterwards

Gawd, I hayte it when things like that happen. Last year inPenbryn we seened to have a influx of sausage burners...

Hi all, im new to this thing but the PAT testing is something ive been concerned about. If you need to get all your elecricals tested this means there's going to be students wandering round campus carting tv's round! Also, in the handbook it says no toastie makers but on the students guild website it says a must have for all students is .. you've guessed it...a toastie maker! I dont get it. They're supposed to make you feel comfortable not worried out of your head in case you do something wrong! Do you think we can take a mini George Forman? I cant live without mine!

Yes you can have your Gorge Formby grill.....
