How can I be sure that a gap year company is reliable/legitimate?

I'm looking at gap year travel companies and have been reading about people being scammed while others founds that some organised tours simply weren't what they claimed to be. I really want to verify that the companies I'm looking at are reliable, legitimate and have good reviews. I'm especially concerned about Tru Experience Travel (mostly because there are some mistakes on the website, very few testimonies from previous participants and when emailing them, they aren't very professional) and I also am interested in Tru Travels (I hadn't heard of them until yesterday.)

Does anyone know anything about these two, or know of the best way for me to check their reliability? I'm so worried about spending a lot of my money on a trip and then getting little out of it. I don't feel that travelling independently is best for me as I would like the security and company of a group tour.

I appreciate any advice! Thanks!
