Hello, i'm in Lyddon. Don't know anyone else who is... Actually, I don't even know where Lyddon IS. I'm beginning to suspect Lyddon is less a place and more a state of mind*.

I've just done some research and the 'annexes' of Lyddon hall appear to be two rows of terraced-style housing that were built slightly later than the 'Hall' itself. Thats what I can gather from websites although it's all very vague.

The 'annexes' look like they are just over the road from each other, about 100yards away from the main hall which is the Victorian house you see on the brochure.

Some Photo's here.

Hope it isn't that wet all the time!

Hello people,

I have been given a room in Lyddon Hall too. I didn't know it is divided in annexes.
I am a Spanish Erasmus student, so I applied really early.

I will be in Education.

See you at Lyddon.

So what do you think of Lyddon so far from the pics and stuff. I hear that its one of the nicest to live in and the social life isn't too bad.

Ive been to visit it twice and the actual hall itself is lovely..rooms are spacious etc. Just a bit worried what the annexes are going to be like..but might be ok! Think I'm just worried cause I'm nervous about it as it is so making it worse for myself really!

Simon which annexe are you in?

I'm sure the rooms will be ok. I'm more concerned about the food quality

So what is Lyddons 'thing'? I mean, what are Lyddonites? Rahs, pissheads, boring?? What prejudices, beliefs and stereotypes do people have about Lyddon?

mm good point about the food..justgonna have to hope for the best i think :s as for the stereotypes...ive never heard of one..dont know if thats a good thing or not?!
I was in Lyddon last year, few words of advice:

1) pray you get a big room. They vary massively in size I was in a medium size one with wash basin but the other ones on my part of the corridor were massive, and if you get REALLY lucky and get the top floor of the main hall they come with double beds (I think).

2) don't let the warden bully you. We had some problems last year with the food and state of kitchens as they are very demanding on how clean they should be kept and aren't afraid to lock them. This was our biggest issue last year and after much battling we got them relaxed a bit. you will find the same that in freshers week they don't care then probably the monday they will lock most of them because they are messy we bitched and moaned and in the end we were allowed to do the washing up the next day before midday. But they are right cocks about it.

3) get the subwardens battered. They are like us and when drunk don't care but when sober certain ones can be dicks i'm sure you'll find that out.

4) Food aint brilliant, be prepared to order in, Luckys' or Flames are good and cheap and know where lyddon hall is.

5) there is limited fridge space, middle floor has 2 kitchens to some 20 odd rooms and only 2 standard fridges so if you have your own small one thats good to bring up.

Thats about it really without scaring you guys too much. I had a great time there and it's the people not the food / subwardens which make it! And the showers are actually quite nice there unlike other residences

Hey, nice to speak to someone who's been in Lyddon. I've got a few questions... if you don't mind answering them .

1. Are the annexes the two rows of terraced houses? Are they connected to the main hall or do you have to go outside to reach them?

2. Who are the wardens and subwardens? Are they students other people?

3. Does the hall have a good social life? Societies and so-on?

4. Wheres the nearest pub and how much a pint?

/\ most important /\

1. yeh the annexes stretch from the corner to about 4 hours from the union but yes you do have to walk to the main hall where all the food is served etc. It does have it's own common room in the basement which is a bit dark and dingy but has a table tennis table in it. The walk in winter is a bit **** but the breakfasts aren't worth it anyways so you can avoid them.

2. The warden is the woman who runs the place theres a really cool one who is quite short and round but she's lovable and approachable. the taller one with brown hair is a right arse though. The subwardens are students and live in various rooms around the halls. one on middle floor annexe2, one bottom floor annexe2, and 1 in the main hall and one in annexe 3 i think. The senior sub warden Charlotte is still there this year, but i think the others are going into new halls. I suspect charlotte wont tolerate much due to her being in her final year and going on my experiences  but theres not a great deal of punishment they can do except lock the kitchen, but then just fake anemia/diabetes/any other medical condition which needs food and they have to open them up! Also there is one room key which used to open the kitchens up anyway.

3. Social life - Do the socials, they are ace. 50p a drink inc cheap ass vodkas and it's all run by people who live there so you can get doubles and triples for hardly anything. We held about 3 last year and each time was a blur since we left. A good social sec is the key though. The hall is so small you get about 25+ on each night because every one knows everyone. so theres no need for a society as such but also at uni a lot of sociallising is course mates and sports.

4. Nearest pub is the union. You can see it from the front windows of annexe 2 (and hear all the gigs like i did last year for free!) Old bar is cool for an intimate pint in and old style pub and it's about 2.00 a pint on average but only £1.50 for snake bite. other than that the library pub is £1 a pint on monday with a yellow card (make sure u get one asap) and the Dry dock is really close just off campus for £1 a pint on thursdays.

Anything else just let me know

Yes there is that..guess I shouldn't complain- thousands wouldn't!!

Daft question for MikeyB..do you think we're disadvantaged being so "on" campus? eg do we miss out being away from headingley?

No it is a massive advantage being on campus. I never once paid a taxi fare to/from clubs which saves a massive amount of money. Boddington etc piss about with buses which get PACKED and often can take an hour to get to campus so those 9 o clock lectures after a night out are do-able from Lyddon but not from Boddington. because we are all students all your friends will come to you rather than you to them so you needn't worry about ever being lonely, there will always be atleast one person you know on campus at any one time, where as out in the sticks if you don't get on with people out there might be a bit **** for you. It's close to town shopping which passes the weekends and the student loan quite nicely.

I can't think of any advantages except a REAL cheap bar out at the halls further away. This is why I now live in Hyde Park area and not Headingly.
