injections

im terrified of needles and ive had terrible experiences with needles espesh in school...which id rather not go into detail...

well i dont want to go into my adult life crying at the doctors about injections. im a 16yr old girl.
well with injections, i have to be held down before i have them, cos im soo scared. i try to control myself and calm down. but i literally cant. i just physically and mentally cant control myself and i go berserk at the thought of an injection, espesh before i have them.
i dont really know what it is that im frightened of- the pain, or the actual needle. since i cant control myself, i just lose it, is it possible its psychological?

i dont want to be seen as a baby when im an adult..i feel so bad..

Its not silly or childish to have a phobia, I have loads. Maybe you should try thinking, writing and/or talking about how your phobia started and which part of the injections it is that bothers you.

As for the injections themselves theres loads of stuff you can try. I find looking away helps a lot. Some people focus on counting slowly back from ten as its usually all over long before then. Talk to the doctor or nurse about your fears and they'll probably have some suggestions.

Also having an injection in a private room might help.

im exactly the same as you, ive got to go to the dentist on wednesday and im really worried about the injections i will have to have so anyone who has any advice on how to cope at the dentists would be very useful. Do you actually feel the needle?

I normally just look away or try to name football teams or something silly like that but it doesnt really work taht often. You arent alone in your fear though, just thought i would let you know that xx

This is rather common tbh. There are a few options.

a)Aks your GP if it is possible to prescribe something calming. I know they sometimes do this before surgery but I'm not certain about injections.

b)Do tell the nurse or doctor who administers the injection that you are really scared about it. They will be used to it and will do their best to make it as easy as possible for you.

c)Try to talk about it to someone on beforehand. Just feeling a bit prepared could help a lot.

d)Take the day of so you don't have lots of other things to worry about.

Heya, I'm terrified of needles too. I went to the dentist about 2 years ago for a filling, and they offered to sedate me because I started hyperventilating and crying.

The worst thing is, and I think this goes for all phobias, is that I know it's completely irrational. For my TB jab at school, I saw someone have it before me and I started having a panic attack in the corridor. It took 4 nurses to hold me down.

I'd like to think I'm getting a little better with them - I managed to keep myself relatively calm for the two before the dentist, and only felt a little feint and teary rather than feeling like I was about to die!

It's nothing to be ashamed of though. People who are scared of spiders don't feel ashamed, why should we?

As far as I understand it, there are two different types of the phobia - general fear of needles, or a fear of being injected which is called Trypanophobia, which is what I suffer from - so it extends to insect bites and stings.

Best thing to do is inform your doctor that you are "not good" with needles - I know in hospitals they often try to get someone who is known for being gentle and use needles designed for babies so it's not as noticeable. Don't be ashamed of it though! I'm not, I just make sure people know so if there is a problem they know why.

I'm also afraid of needles (along with deep water, flying (BAD experiences), heights and SPIDERS......) I find that I have to watch (weird I know) but when the moment of impact comes I often have to look away, I could look for TB as they hold it in and I KNOW I would have freaked more...I've been ignoring MMR reminders for a while but I apparently need to have MMR and Meningitis C before I go to uni :frown: Maybe ask about a sedative?? I don't think there's an actual cure- you could try hypnosis though...

I used to be exactly the same. When I was 11, I went into hospial to have my appendix removed, and (I have bad veins) it took 19 attempts to get a drip into me! Needless to say, I came out of it a little traumatised!

But, I'm cured now! Even gave blood to the Transfusion Service recently. About three years later, I was working in a hotel bar, and every week we had a stage hypnotist come in. One night after his show we got talking, and he told me he done therapy work too, and I told him about my phobia.

He went away and researched it, and the next week, before his show, took me up to an empty room in the hotel. He laid me down on the bed, and just talked calmly to me for about fifteen minute. I didn't pass out or anything, and I remember everything he said. But it worked! Crazy as it may seem, I swear by it.
