Why did you choose Keele?

Sorry if a similar thread already exists, but i thought it would be interesting to see how people ended up here!

As in, did you apply here originally - if so, what for? Did you hold them as your firm/insurance or go through clearing? What made you choose Keele? Are you there now, or begining in september? What do you consider are the best/worst things about it? That sort of thing really!

For me - i applied for Pharmacy to start in September, as they were one of the few Uni's who mentioned lower grades in prospectuses etc - therefore i would have a range of grades offers (i hoped - and consequently did) from which i could choose my firm and insurance.

To be honest, i doubt i would have even considered accepting it as my Firm or Insurance if i didn't come down for the interview. Firstly because it was a uni that hardly anyone has heard of (including myself at this point) and secondly because i'd heard Keele had the highest suicide rate amongst students!

But anyway, i came and i LOVED it! Not entirely sure what it was about it, but it was just a really beautiful campus and surroundings, and everything just seemed so relaxed - the area and the people! Twas just one of those places i could see myself in.

So yeah, got offered the place and was ecstatic! But as it was my lowest offer, even though i wanted to put it as my firm, i put it as insurance (as i didn't want to risk having it as my firm with no insurance, due to the added pressure of clearing if i did happen to miss my grades).

In the end i missed my firm grades, so am happily starting at Keele this September- guess it was just meant to be!

So yeah, as nerdy as this may sound, i'm really interested as to why others chose Keele too!

Hope this hasn't bored anyone!

I applied to keyel mainly because the points you neeed to do law is quite low..despite being a good performer in the uni league tables etc..so that meant i could do law without doing any AS resits, which i was so happy about cos i hate exams!

I was unsure about choosing keyel for my uni because it wasn;t really a very fashionable uni to choose at my college and i got the impression it was in the middle of nowhere with nothing but a KFC service station. Also my friend went to keyel on an open day b4 me, came back and sed it was rrubbish which really put me off! (always trust your own opinion! (but dont ignore evry1 elses at the same time!)) but u'll see once uv started that theres much more to keele than what it looks like...the trees and green stuff are really a massive bonus because in general the ppl n nightlife are wkd neway..n its cool to jus find yourself with time to think on your own by the lake only 5 mins after leavin the pub! (i did this quite a bit after seein villa gettin hammered at union square time and time again!)..okay im writin too much but yeah thats y im at keyel cos it had a low grade for a decent course.

Really, is that so..

Better not let that crazy Bert bloke on here find out theres more than one petrol station, He'll probably make up some wierd story about Les Ferdinand about it.
I liked Keele so much that I applied three times...

Music Tech and Neuroscience (my eventual choice)

Music Tech and Computer Science

Computer Science and Neuroscience

I applied to Keele because I fell in love with the campus and the attitude surrounding the place. I really liked the look of the Music Tech course in particular, though it took a chat with the guy who did the talk on it to get me over my worry that I wouldn't be a confident enough musician to get what I want out of it (I used to clam up when I had to play for somebody else, though surprisingly that started AFTER a SUCCESSFUL live performance).

I also applied to York for their 5-year computer science course, my original intention was to go for that. I went to the interview for it and the guy there seemed to really like me, he even dropped my offer down to ABB, without any conditions on my further maths grade.

As great as the interview went I realised that all I could ever hope to achieve in computer science would be making money. Also, it would be a spiritually unfulfilling career. That's why I decided to drop all of my other offers and go for Music Tech and Neuroscience at Keele.

I visited Keele on an open day with an ex 2 years ago now and fell in love with the place instantly. As said before, there's that mix of countryside and town (which you'll really find at night when sitting out by Keele Hall, listening to the M6) and the people are just so fab! The courses are well taught (mostly) and everything is within easy reach (Lindsay Halls = a 5 minute walk to lectures, always great when you've been out the night before!)

So yeah, I chose Keele for history and american studies because the departments looked good, the scenery was ace and the people were lovely. Having been there a year already I'm still in love with the place and would recommend it to anyone! Everyone's really genuine and always strive to be helpful and friendly.. obviously if you're used to city life and enjoy being out on the razz every night then maybe Keele isn't for you... but yes, seeing Keele in the summer you'll certainly fall in love with it too!
I applied to Keele because I originally wanted to keep up both sciences and arts subjects. I applied twice;
Biology and English
Neuroscience and English.
Keele was practically the only university in the country that allowed me to do this. Oxford Brookes had asked for low grades for Biology and English and I was hoping to keep them as my Insurance offer, however my conditional offer for Brookes was higher than my Keele offer, so after much deliberation and many phone calls to Keele Admissions, I put Keele down as my Firm and Insurance offer.

However, the closer it got to the actual A Levels, the more depressed I got about the sciences. I eventually realised I couldn't accomplish much if I was going to be so down on myself, came to terms with the fact I'd never make a groundbreaking scientific discovery and callled Keele up and changed to English and I.R with English and Philosophy as my insurance. I didn't want to change Keele as my choices because I had gone there and fallen in love. I hate London and busy cities, most of the time, and Keele seemed quite central. English department was so friendly and kind and I just loved the lecturers (wanted to take them home!)

After all those hurdles and many many more, despite thinking I'd never get to Keele, I called up on results day (because UCAS track wasn't showing anything) sobbing and they confirmed I was in!

And that be the condensed story. Sorry to bore.

It reminds me of home.
In 5 mins I can be in the middle of nowhere.
I love it.

Plus I was down Keele a few times this year as I have a friend there so i'd go and see him. They have the course I wanted to do and then the chance of a semester at UBC, I have to work my little socks off because I'd love to go and study there. Plus it's lovely (the area), the people i've met are nice, the bouncers let me into K2 when I wasn't a student and were really funny. Just an all round nice place. I may change my mind after living there but so far i'm looking forward to it.

Plus it isn't too far from home, My insurance was in Cardiff, glad I put Keele as my Firm as I got in both. Gonna be a good three years I reckon.
